There was a buzz of excitement recently at Isis House care home in Oxford as resident Ken Painter and his lifelong friend Gordon welcomed a special guest - former Oxford United winger and club ambassador Peter Rhoades-Brown.
Peter’s visit was more than just a meet and greet. It was a powerful reunion of shared history, football passion and the kind of stories that never fade - even when memories begin to.
Ken has been an Oxford United supporter for as long as he can remember. “It’s what I’ve always loved,” he said. “Supporting the club and the city has always been my passion.”
His journey with the club stretches back to the days in the lower leagues. While Ken couldn’t quite recall his first match, Gordon vividly remembered them both attending games together when Oxford played in the Fourth Division - long before the team’s rise to national recognition.
One match that stood out for both men was Oxford United’s 3–0 victory over Arsenal at the Manor Ground in 1986, a crucial win that secured their status in Division 1. “The atmosphere was unlike anything we’ve ever seen before,” said Gordon.
Ken also fondly remembers the 1986 Milk Cup Final at Wembley, when Oxford lifted the trophy. “Nothing will beat the feeling of winning at Wembley,” he said.
When asked about favourite players, Ken reflected that for him, it has always been about the team. “Having the likes of Gary Briggs and John Aldridge at the club was amazing,” he said, “but it’s always been about supporting Oxford United as a whole.”
Ken still follows matches today by listening to the radio whenever he can, cheering the team on from Isis House. His message to the current squad? “Keep going, lads - you’re doing a wonderful job and making us proud!”
Peter Rhoades-Brown, Oxford United Ambassador was clearly moved by the visit. “This is what it’s all about,” he said. “Supporters like Ken are the history of this great club. They’ve supported us through thick and thin - proudly wearing yellow and blue even during the tough times.”
He was particularly struck by Ken’s enduring passion. “Even with memory problems, Ken still vividly remembers the joy of supporting Oxford. That says everything about the impact this club can have.”
Peter also highlighted how important it is for the club to stay connected with older supporters. “If it wasn’t for fans like Ken and Gordon, we wouldn’t be where we are today. We have so much to thank them for.”
Home Manager, Kelly-Marie Allen, said: “We were delighted to see the joy and excitement in Ken and Gordon as they spoke with Peter. It wasn’t just a visit - it was a celebration of lifelong friendship, community pride, and unwavering loyalty to a beloved football club.”
