The team of 14 care colleagues, joined by Home Manager Catherine Barthe, local GP Nicky Jacobson and a volunteer, took on the challenge on Saturday 12 September, with the aim of raising £1,000 for resident outings and experiences.

The challenge proved tougher than expected, with Saturday bringing hail, heavy rain and strong winds. The team split into groups, with some tackling the Pyg Trail while others took on the Llanberis Path. Despite the difficult conditions, 11 members of the team reached the summit on Saturday. Three others were forced to turn back because of the weather but remained determined to complete the challenge. They returned on Sunday, when conditions had improved, and all three successfully made it to the top. This meant all 14 members of the team reached the summit, despite the challenging conditions.

The fundraising challenge was inspired by the team’s desire to give residents more opportunities to get out and enjoy experiences that are meaningful to them. Funds raised will help support trips and activities such as visits to the seaside, beautiful gardens, afternoon teas, shopping trips and returning to places that hold special memories.
The team has already exceeded its original £1,000 target, raising £1,290, with a further £283.75 in Gift Aid, bringing the total to over £1,500.

Catherine Barthe, Home Manager at Stirlings, said:
“We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part. The weather certainly tested us, but the team supported one another and showed such determination. When three of the team had to turn back, they could easily have called it a day, but they came back the following morning and conquered the mountain. It really says a lot about the team we have at Stirlings.”

Nicky Jacobson, local Wantage GP who supports Stirlings care home and is no stranger to fundraising challenges, said:
“It was a real privilege to take part alongside the Stirlings team. The weather certainly tested us, but their determination and teamwork were fantastic to see. Knowing that the money raised will help residents enjoy more days out and create special memories made every step worthwhile.”

The achievement reflects the importance Stirlings places on supporting residents to continue enjoying life, stay connected with their communities and make the most of opportunities both within the home and further afield.

Catherine added:
“Our residents are at the heart of everything we do, and this challenge was all about giving them more opportunities to enjoy days out and make memories. We’re delighted that we’ve not only reached but exceeded our fundraising target. We might all have very tired legs now, but knowing what the money will help make possible makes every step worthwhile.”
