Goodson residents prove that sport can be fun at any age
On the back of their recent achievements at the Virtual Senior Games Wiltshire, Goodson Lodge residents prove that keeping fit, active and healthy can be fun at any age.
It has long been recognised that for older people staying fit and active has many benefits, including lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer as well as improving strength and balance, thereby mitigating against injuries from falls so that individuals stay independent for longer. But not only does remaining active improve your physical health, it also helps improve mental health too. It can aid the ability to think, learn and make decisions, as well as improving mood, increasing self-esteem, helping with relaxation and relieving stress as well as increasing energy levels. The benefits are seemingly endless. And it’s fun too!
There are plenty of ways to add more physical movement into everyday life and one of the ways that Goodson Lodge residents enjoy staying active is to exercise in the home’s beautiful gardens.
Home manager Mandy Palfrey says: “We encourage everyone to stay active and join in with group activities or individually by enjoying a stroll around the garden or pottering with the plants in the raised beds. It’s never too late for exercise to have a positive effect on the physical and mental health of everyone.”
Being such a sporty home also means that residents have enjoyed watching the Euros and are looking forward to watching Wimbledon and the Lions tour of South Africa.
