A Taste of the Tropics at The Meadows: Club Tropicana Summer Celebration
Inspired by residents’ love of music - and a nod to the classic Wham! song - this tropical-themed day brought the sunshine indoors with music, dancing, delicious food, and a strong sense of community spirit.
Residents, colleagues, relatives, and special guests enjoyed a vibrant summer celebration at The Meadows last month as the home hosted its very own Club Tropicana event. Inspired by residents’ love of music - and a nod to the classic Wham! song - this tropical-themed day brought the sunshine indoors with music, dancing, delicious food, and a strong sense of community spirit.
“It was fantastic to have the support from relatives and staff to make this tropical event go smoothly,” said Megan Humphries, Activities Co-ordinator. “We had The Dukes - Didcot Ukulele Band playing in the morning, which kicked off the rest of the day. Residents and staff were on their feet and the happy faces around the room were wonderful to see. We followed this with a BBQ which was well deserved after all the dancing. We’ve had such a positive and thankful response from this day.”
The Dukes Didcot Ukulele Band kindly donated their time to entertain residents. One particularly moving moment came when a member of the band, who is a relative of one of the residents, performed in front of her grandmother for the very first time - bringing a tear to many eyes.
Resident Pat shared: “It was a lovely day. I enjoyed the band, food and especially the boss man - walking around in his grass skirt, getting us all into the spirit.”
The home was transformed into a tropical paradise, with colourful decorations lovingly created by residents, team members, and younger visitors who helped paint giant leaves and other themed décor. Complementing the BBQ was a tiki bar with fruit skewers, Pimms, shandy, G&Ts, and a selection of refreshing drinks.
Megan added, “I chose Club Tropicana as we are big fans of music at The Meadows. The idea came from the Wham! song and it tied in perfectly with celebrating summer together. It was great to see everyone on the dancefloor, including the Mayor of Didcot, Jim Loder!”
Events play an important role in supporting resident wellbeing and creating fun, sociable experiences at The Meadows.
