Tony Wins Star Baker on Behalf of Grace Care Centre
Tony, a resident at Grace Care Centre, has always had a love of baking that originates from happy childhood memories at school and spending time with his family.
Reflecting on his love of baking, Tony said: “It all started from the age of 12 when I was taught how to bake in school. I can remember spending time baking with my Mum and Grandma. Every time I bake now, it reminds me of them – I just love it!”
“Since I’ve been living at Grace Care Centre, I like to make special birthday cakes for other residents. I enjoy doing this and if I’m honest I also think I’m quite good!
It was therefore no surprise to the team at Grace Care Centre that Tony put himself forward to represent the residents from the home and work alongside Chef, Alyssa, for the OSJCT Bake Off competition.
Inspired by the Great British Bake Off and National Baking Week, the competition put residents and team members from five OSJCT care homes against each other with the aim of being crowned Star Baker. The other care homes involved were: The Lakes Care Centre in South Cerney, Goodson Lodge in Trowbridge, Edwardstow Court in Stow-on-the-Wold and Wellford Gardens in Wheatley.
Spread across four rounds, the competition ensured that the full range of baking skills were considered to decide the winner. The different bakes for each round were: chocolate brownies, Victoria sponge, bread week (of which Tony and Alyssa make 4 different breads) and a final showstopper cake.
After careful deliberation, Tony and Alyssa fought off some tough competition to take home the prize on behalf of the team at Grace Care Centre.
Congratulations Tony and Alyssa!
