Townsend House helps organise military send off for veteran
Veterans from across the country gather to pay their respects to resident with no known family
Veterans from across the country gathered at Townsend House in Headington to pay their respects to Peter McGregor, a resident who sadly passed away recently.
Peter spent the last four years of his life at Townsend House and had no known family. However, the care team knew that Peter had served in the armed forces, and with the support of funeral celebrant Andy Hansen, they reached out to the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) and Royal British Legion (RBL) to ensure he received the farewell he deserved.
Veterans who never knew Peter came from across the country—including Wales, Bristol, London, and Gloucestershire—to attend his funeral. The service was also attended by standard bearers from RAFA and RBL, a bugler, representatives from RAF Brize Norton and RAF Benson, a biker escort, and carers from Townsend House. As a final tribute, Peter’s casket was draped with the British flag, and Paul Harbour from the 617 Squadron Association laid a poppy wreath on behalf of its members.
Following the service, mourners gathered together at Townsend House for the wake.
Russ, a member of the 617 Squadron, said: “Our veterans should never be sent off alone.”
Jacqueline Smith, Activities Co-ordinator at Townsend House, added: “The ceremony was a touching and fitting farewell, complete with an inspiring eulogy that reflected Peter’s service and sacrifice. We extend our deepest gratitude to all who contributed to making this farewell so special. Peter would have been proud.”
