Resident Rodney’s love of banger racing was brought back to life with a special trip to Standlake Arena, thanks to a thoughtful promise from a member of the Townsend House care home team.
On Sunday 18 October, Rodney enjoyed a trip to watch the banger racing alongside fellow residents Debroy and April, accompanied by handyman David, Activities Coordinator Jess, and carers Carolyn and Imran.
The idea came about after David got chatting to Rodney, who shared fond memories of going to watch cars and banger racing with his family when he was younger. Hearing how much it meant to him, David promised that one day he would take him to see the racing again.
The team made it happen, and the timing could not have been better. The trip took place just one day after Rodney’s 60th birthday, making it an extra-special birthday treat.
Rodney said: “I remember coming here with my Dad and it’s made my day. It’s the best day out I’ve had.”
There was plenty of excitement throughout the afternoon, with residents cheering as the cars sped around the track and crashed into one another. Everyone got involved, picking their favourite cars in each race and cheering them on to victory.
For Rodney, the trip was about more than watching the racing. It was an opportunity to revisit a much-loved pastime, reconnect with happy memories of time spent with his dad and enjoy something that had been part of his life growing up.
Lisa Oliver, Home Manager at Townsend House, said: “It was wonderful to see Rodney enjoying something that means so much to him. Sometimes, it’s the conversations we have with residents that give us the best ideas for making special things happen”.
“David made a promise to Rodney, and seeing the team come together to make it a reality was lovely. The trip brought back happy memories for Rodney, and it was brilliant to see all three residents getting caught up in the excitement of the racing. It’s a great example of how listening to our residents and finding out what matters to them can make such a difference.”
The team also received some lovely feedback from Juliette Hook, whose husband Matt is the promoter at Standlake Arena. Juliette got in touch after the event to share how pleased they were to welcome the Townsend House residents.
She said: “I just wanted to send you a short message to say how lovely it was to have some of your residents join us for our event and how wonderful it is that your team were able to make this happen for them.
“I would also like to highlight just how excellent the care team who attended with the residents were. They were so professional, attentive and the level of care they gave to the residents whilst they were on site with us was so lovely to see throughout the day.”
Juliette added that “being able to host events for the local community brought them immense joy, and they hoped they had been able to bring the same happiness to everyone who attended”.
The trip was a memorable day out for everyone involved and a reminder that some of the most meaningful experiences come from listening, keeping promises and making time for the things people love. It also highlighted the positive difference that can come from local organisations working together to create special moments for residents.
