Townsend House Volunteer Raihan is Oxford Brookes' Volunteer of the Year
Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action Awards 2024

It’s not just us that think our volunteers are brilliant! Volunteer Raihan Islam was recognised at the Oxfordshire Community and Voluntary Action (OCVA) Awards, winning ‘Oxford Brookes Volunteer of the Year’. OSJCT Volunteer Manager Debs Clementson (pictured) joined Raihan and his mum to collect his award and to celebrate his incredible achievement.
Raihan started volunteering at Townsend House, Oxford, run by The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) in 2023, whilst studying for his degree in Biomedical Science at Oxford Brookes University. Raihan runs a mobile shop for residents, and quickly became one of the team and a firm favourite with everyone at the care home. They are thrilled that Raihan’s volunteering stood out to the judges, and they recognised the significant contribution he makes to his local community.
Debs said: “Volunteers at OSJCT make a huge difference to the lives of those that live with us, sharing their interests and hobbies with our residents. As soon as Raihan joined Townsend House a Volunteer, it was apparent that he was going to give it his all and make lasting connections with the residents. It was a privilege to join him at the awards ceremony to see his contribution recognised by others in the Oxfordshire community. No doubt that the residents at Townsend House will be having their own celebrations with him when he’s next volunteering!”
Raihan tells us a bit more about his volunteering, why he enjoys it and what receiving the award means to him.
How would you describe your volunteer role to a friend?
My volunteer role as brings a bit of the outside world into the care home. Every week, I run a mobile shop filled with useful items and treats for the residents. It's like a mini convenience store on wheels, with essentials like shower gel and delightful goodies like chocolates. Most importantly I get to interact with the residents, help them with their choices, and make sure they have access to what they need, all while building meaningful connections. I have had lots of great conversations and heard plenty of fascinating stories during my time.
How long have you volunteered at OSJCT?
Nine months
Tell us a bit about you.
I’m Raihan and have recently graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in Biomedical Science! I love all things sports and I am an avid gym goer. My favourite board game is Ludo. I love to pass my time spending it with friends as I’m sure everyone does and reading books!
What motivated you to become a volunteer at OSJCT?
My motivation to volunteer at OSJCT came from a deep desire to give back to the community and make a positive impact on the lives of elderly individuals. I had recently just lost my own grandparents after spending time with them in Bangladesh and wanted to add a few more smiles to other seniors.
What skills and experiences have you gained through your volunteering?
I’ve gained valuable interpersonal skills, particularly in communicating with and understanding the needs of elderly individuals. I've also learned a lot about patience, empathy, and the importance of listening. Additionally, managing the mobile shop has honed my organisational skills and my ability to adapt to different situations and preferences.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about volunteering with OSJCT?
I would say go for it! Volunteering with OSJCT is an incredibly rewarding experience. It offers the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the residents, build meaningful relationships, and gain valuable skills. The sense of community and the joy you bring to others are unmatched, and you'll find that you receive just as much, if not more, than you give.
What is your favourite memory as a volunteer for OSJCT?
I was having a conversation with a resident about a recent trip I had and what I got up to, being able to hear them share stories from their past that was like mine was incredibly heartwarming. It was a wonderful reminder of the joy that simple things can bring and the deep connections we can make through shared experiences.
What’s your proudest achievement in your role so far?
My proudest achievement in my role so far is winning this volunteering award. It means a lot to me because it acknowledges the positive impact, I've been able to make on the lives of the residents. It's incredibly rewarding to know that my efforts are appreciated and that I've been able to bring joy and convenience to those at the care home. This recognition has inspired me to continue giving my best and finding new ways to support and connect with the residents.
Why do you continue to volunteer at OSJCT?
I continue to volunteer at OSJCT because of the deep sense of fulfilment and joy it brings me. Each visit to the care home reaffirms the importance of community and the impact that small acts of kindness can have on people's lives. The relationships I've built with the residents are incredibly meaningful; their stories, wisdom, and gratitude are truly heartwarming.
Additionally, I see firsthand how much the residents look forward to the mobile shop visits. It provides them with not only necessary items but also a sense of normalcy and independence. Knowing that I can contribute to their happiness and well-being is a powerful motivator.
