Former firefighter Phil, 93, from Henry Cornish Care Centre revisited Chipping Norton Fire Station, sharing memories, spotting himself in photos, comparing equipment, and enjoying a meaningful trip down memory lane.
Residents and staff from Henry Cornish Care Centre, part of the not-for-profit The Orders of St John Care Trust, enjoyed a truly special afternoon as 93-year-old resident Phil returned to where he once proudly served — Chipping Norton Fire Station.
Phil served as a firefighter for 14 years, and this visit marked a meaningful return to his roots. Accompanied by Home Manager Laura Beadle, and Activities Coordinator Tina Brain, Phil travelled by taxi to the station, turning the journey itself into a real trip down memory lane. Along the way, Phil pointed out where he used to live and shared stories about streets and buildings that have changed over his lifetime, sparking conversation and reflection.
At the station, Phil explored the fire engine and modern equipment, comparing it with the tools he used during his years of service. The visit prompted fascinating discussions about what has moved with the times — and which pieces of equipment are still recognisable today.
One particularly touching moment came as Phil looked through historic photographs displayed around the station and spotted himself alongside his former crewmates. He also shared memories of incidents he attended during his service, captivating everyone present.
Phil said:
“Thank you so much for organising this visit. It has been amazing — I am so lucky. It was wonderful to visit the station I used to work at.”
Home Manager Laura added:
“It has been a pleasure arranging this trip and accompanying Phil to revisit his history. There is so much more to life in a care home, and it is a genuine joy to be able to share moments like these with our residents.”
The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all and highlighted the importance of celebrating personal history and life stories. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Chipping Norton Fire Station for so warmly welcoming Phil and showing him around.
