Wellford Gardens celebrates generation of heroes
“We gave up our tomorrows for you to have today.”
Residents and team members at Wellford Gardens in Wheatley, Oxfordshire marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with an afternoon full of music, memories, and heartfelt celebration.
The home hosted a vibrant street party lunch, complete with a BBQ feast prepared by Executive Chef Andrew Lawrence and his talented team. A special Union Jack cake was unveiled, lovingly made by Minao, who was incredibly proud to share it with everyone. Resident Kathleen Hall cut the cake and shared her feelings about the celebrations: “It was a real honour to be part of such a special day of remembrance.”
The afternoon was filled with the sounds of laughter and live music from The Velvet Tones, who brought a nostalgic flair to the festivities.
It was also a time for reflection. Many residents shared their memories of VE Day, with Ros poignantly recalling: “How could I forget? My mum and brother went to Buckingham Palace to be sure it was all over. We’ll never forget the sound of the planes coming over… We gave up our tomorrows for you to have today.”
Sally Connolly, Events Manager at Wellford Gardens, summed up the day: “This has been such a special event. It was a real team effort to create a wonderful day for our residents. Nothing is too much for this generation of heroes.”
