Wellford Gardens celebrates its first birthday
Residents and team members at Wellford Gardens in Wheatley, near Oxford, proudly celebrated the first anniversary of its opening earlier this month (March). The care home is the newest service launched by OSJCT and offers an all-inclusive service to both permanent and respite residents.
The care home opened its doors to the local community to mark the occasion with a party. Guests enjoyed cocktails, delicious treats, and live music.
Dorte Chandler, General Manager, said: "Over the past year, Wellford has become more than just a care home—we’ve become a part of Wheatley. From welcoming visitors even before opening to building a team of incredible volunteers, our community ties have never been stronger.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us for the celebrations. We look forward to many more years of special memories, laughter, and connection!"
As of March this year, 28 long-term residents had moved in, with several others staying on a short-term basis—either to try out the service or as an alternative to their regular support. The care home has a total of 65 bedrooms, and new residents continue to join each week.
Wellford Gardens was officially opened in June 2024 by His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester. Among the residents who had the honour of meeting The Duke was William ‘Bill’ Clenell, one of the home’s first residents.
Bill said: "This was the first time I met a member of the Royal Family. I was a bit tongue-tied! The Duke asked me if I was the first person in this room, and although I wasn’t the first to move in, I am the first person in this room—so I can claim to be an original resident."
Sally Ann Connolly, Events Manager at Wellford Gardens, highlighted the home's strong community connections: "We’ve grown our Wellford family to the point where we have amazing residents and really strong community links. The local table tennis group donated a table to us, allowing us to start a table tennis club.
“We run a regular bridge club with friends of a resident who enjoys the card game. We also visit a local church service regularly and have links with two nurseries. Our connection with the community has grown beyond expectations in the past year."
One of the home’s volunteers, Mary, who lives in Wheatley village, also attended the birthday celebrations. Mary has been visiting Wellford Gardens since it opened and shared her experience: "I’ve been coming along and have made friends with the residents. I’ve had the most amazing time, and it’s enriched my life as well."
The quality and care of Wellford Gardens has achieved national recognition by Knight Frank, UK Estate Agent, who will feature the Wheatley care home in its forthcoming, Luxury Care Home Guide 2025, UK’s Top 100 Care Homes.
