Edna turns 100

Edna Hardy celebrated her 100th birthday by completing a charity garden walk at Westgate House, raising funds for resident outings and proving community spirit and generosity know no age.

Westgate House care home, part of The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), is celebrating resident Edna Hardy, who marked her 100th birthday by completing a final lap of the home’s garden walk in aid of the Residents’ Amenity Fund.

Edna, who has lived at Westgate House since June 2024, took on the challenge after a volunteer suggested she mark her milestone birthday by completing 100 laps of the garden. She immediately embraced the idea, keen to raise funds to support outings and shared experiences for fellow residents.

Born in Greater London in 1926, Edna lived through the Second World War, left school at 14 to support her family, and later married her childhood sweetheart in 1948. She moved to Wallingford 67 years ago and has remained closely connected to her local community ever since. Throughout her life, the importance of community and helping others has been a constant theme — something she continues to embody at Westgate House.

The challenge became a shared celebration within the home, with residents and staff cheering Edna on throughout her progress and gathering for her final lap.

Edna said:
“I wanted to celebrate my 100th birthday by giving something back. Not everyone has visitors, so raising money for the amenity fund means we can all enjoy trips together and make fond memories.”

Edna completed her final lap surrounded by fellow residents, Westgate House colleagues, the local community, and guests including the Deputy Mayor of Wallingford, Mark Hoskins. Despite the warm weather, she finished the walk with determination and was met with applause, cheers and waving flags.

Mark Hoskins said:
“This is my first visit to Westgate House, and I was immediately drawn to the community feel here. Seeing Edna complete her final lap at such speed was incredibly impressive. Her undertaking this challenge and giving back to the community says a great deal about her. Congratulations to Edna and well done to everyone here.”

Daniela Midwinter, Home Manager said:
“Edna is an extraordinary lady whose warmth, determination and generosity shine through in everything she does. She has embraced life at Westgate House fully and has become such an important part of the community here. This challenge reflects who she is at her core — someone who thinks of others first and wants to create joy and opportunity for those around her. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this milestone with her and to see the way she continues to inspire people of all ages.”

Westgate House is proud to support residents in living meaningful, connected lives where community, friendship and purpose remain at the heart of daily life. Edna’s fundraising will help continue this by supporting future outings and shared activities for residents, ensuring more opportunities to make lasting memories together.
