What Makes A Good Carer?
Avonbourne Care Centre has some wonderful carers with some qualities they all share.
Many of us would consider ourselves ‘caring;’ we care about those close to us, we care about things that are important to us. For others, caring is a vocation and at Avonbourne Care Centre in Salisbury, we are grateful to each and every one of our carers. We have vacancies for carers now, so if you have what it takes, we would love to hear from you. Read on to find out what makes a good carer.
We believe that all our residents have the right to be treated with respect and dignity, and that they should feel safe with us. Helping someone like that is the keystone to being a good carer.
Patience and Empathy
Our residents come from all walks of life and we love to hear their stories. When they make Avonbourne their home, it’s important that we’re able to put ourselves in their shoes. Everyone knows how unsettling a house move can be! A good carer is someone who can understand how unsettling this period might be, and moreover have the patience to support our resident through the change. Most settle at Avonbourne Care Centre straight away, but sometimes someone will take a little longer and a good carer realises that everyone is different.
Positivity
It’s been a tough couple of years for everyone and good carers have managed to maintain their positivity and keep smiling. After all, that plays a huge part in the emotional well-being of our residents.
Communication skills
Good carers communicate well, and they understand. They are easy to talk to and can start a conversation with anyone. They can also listen. And they’re genuinely interested in what someone has to say. These skills, combined with observation, help our team notice when something isn’t quite right and a resident isn’t themselves. Picking things up early and spotting potential issues means we can get the right support for our residents at the earliest opportunity.
It’s tough at times but the best carers remain reliable and consistent – because other people rely on them. Our carers are passionate about what they do and they see that as more than just a job. They make a real difference to people’s lives. Could you?
