Windsor Street Care Centre resident Prilly recalls her nursing career on International Nurses Day
Prilly Sutcliffe studied nursing for four years, including maternity care, before specialising in ear, nose and throat (ENT) nursing.
Prilly met her husband Michael when she attended a training course which he was running. They settled in Cheltenham together, where they both worked at Cheltenham Hospital, Prilly as a theatre nurse, and Michael as a Senior Administrator. During her career at the hospital, Prilly was also in charge of the sterilisation department, a complex service that makes sure each operation across the county has the equipment that is needed and that it is medically sterile.
She said, “Nursing is an interesting career, and you feel like you are doing a good thing. I also really enjoyed working with people.”
Prilly and Michael have been married for 47 years. Due to health issues, the couple considered moving to a care home together from their home in Carlton Road, Cheltenham, and stayed at Windsor Street Care Centre as a trial, before deciding to move in.
Prilly said: “It’s bliss in many respects as I don’t have to worry about cooking and cleaning. After testing out the home we decided that we wanted to stay, and we still feel it was the best decision for us.”
The couple pursue their joint interest in birdwatching at the home and use binoculars to look out onto the view of Cleeve Hill from their bedroom.
