World Alzheimers Month
As September marks World Alzheimer’s Month. Edwardstow Court have been making ‘I spy bottles’ to use with their residents who are living with dementia.
I spy bottles can be used with residents either in a one to one session or in group sessions offering opportunities for social interaction, conversation, sensory stimulation and reminiscence. They can also be themed to match resident’s individual interests.
I Spy Bottles, also known as sensory bottles or discovery bottles are plastic bottles that you can fill with odds and ends and then top up with water. Providing appropriate sensory stimulation for residents living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia has been shown in recent studies to decrease agitation and restlessness and to improve sleep.
World Alzheimer's Month is an international campaign every September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. The campaign was launched in 2012 and World Alzheimer's Day is on 21 September each year.
