Baby chicks have arrived at Avonbourne Care Centre in Salisbury, bringing joy to residents and the team just in time for Easter.
For the next two weeks, the home is caring for baby chicks that will hatch from their eggs inside a special incubator.
They were delivered to Avonbourne by Living Eggs, a company that provides specialist equipment as well as the embryo eggs as part of a comprehensive 10-day programme. Over the next two or three days, residents will care for, tend to and wait for the eggs to hatch. During this time, an electronic thermostat ensures accurate temperature control for a high hatch rate, while a brooder box complete with heat light, bedding, feed and waterer is supplied.
Once the eggs hatch, the care and nurture of the fluffy yellow chicks are then part of home life for the next ten days; feeding, cleaning and petting become an essential and stimulating activity for residents.
Jane Mealing, Activities Coordinator, said she is thrilled to see the residents smiles at the sight of the chicks. Their arrival just in time for the Easter weekend has made it an eggstra special occasion, with lots to celebrate.
The chicks’ progress will be captured on Avonbourne’s Facebook page, so please do follow the page for more #hatchwatch updates and other news from the home.
