Marathon Trek for Alzheimer’s Research
September is World Alzheimer’s Month and homes across the OSJCT estate will be taking part in events to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s, the most common cause of dementia.
Avonbourne Care Centre is just a short distance from the route of a 26-mile circular walk on Saturday 3rd September, organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, and our Marketing Manager will be one of the hikers on the day.
The route starts just down the road from Avonbourne Care Centre, at Hudson’s Field, and will take in the stunning cathedral before looping round through the beautiful south Wiltshire countryside, heading north towards Stonehenge, and then completing the circle past Old Sarum, arriving back at Hudson’s Field.
Our marketing manager, Rowen, says “I’m excited and apprehensive in equal measure, but it’s for such a good cause. I’m in awe of the work our home teams put in caring for our residents living with dementia, and I wanted to do something to show my support. It’ll be the most physically challenging thing I’ve ever done!”
Rowen tells us that she is looking forward to spending time walking through the meadows and woodland along the route, with many of the paths following trading routes dating back to medieval times.
“I know there will be some steep bits along the way, but that means some downhill too. Someone gave me some advice and that was to just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and so far that’s worked for me.”
Avon Court is our specialist dementia home at Avonbourne Care Centre where our team is trained to support residents living with dementia. Dementia covers a range of symptoms, including memory loss or challenges with solving problems, and it develops as a result of brain damage from diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s Society aims to inform people about the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and how it is diagnosed, as well as continuing their research into treatments for the condition.
