Resident at Avonbourne Care Centre Fulfils Lifelong Dream of Ice Skating at Planet Ice Basingstoke
Salisbury, Wiltshire – Resident Jennis, 77 at Avonbourne Care Centre in Salisbury has fulfilled a lifelong dream after taking to the ice at Planet Ice Basingstoke, proving that age and challenging needs should never be a barrier to unforgettable experiences.
The special trip was organised by Avonbourne’s dedicated care team as part of the centre’s commitment to personalised, person-centred care. Staff worked closely with Planet Ice to ensure the experience was fully accessible, making thoughtful adaptations so that Jennis could safely enjoy the thrill of gliding across the ice.
For many care home residents, ice skating is a cherished childhood memory or a long-held ambition that once seemed out of reach. With the support of compassionate carers and inclusive community partners, these dreams are now becoming a reality. In some cases, residents even take to the ice in wheelchairs, allowing them to feel the excitement, freedom and joy of skating once more.
The visit was filled with smiles, laughter and emotional moments, creating lasting memories not only for Jennis but also for staff and onlookers. Experiences like these demonstrate the powerful impact of meaningful activities on wellbeing, confidence and quality of life.
“Making dreams come true is at the heart of what we do,” said Home Manager, Kamila Bevan, at Avonbourne Care Centre. “This experience shows how personalised care, creativity and community support can help people continue to enjoy life, no matter their age or abilities.”
Avonbourne Care Centre continues to champion enriching experiences that bring joy, dignity and purpose to residents’ lives, proving that it is never too late for dreams to come true.
