A life well lived, and still being lived: Tony's story

Tony has been part of the Grace Care Centre family almost since it first opened. Arriving with a heart condition and epilepsy that had become difficult to manage at home, he quickly made Grace his own and has been at the heart of the community ever since.

Having divided his life between two very different worlds, London and rural Wales, Tony developed a wide range of passions. In the city he discovered a love of baking, wine, opera and royal history, while in Wales he embraced the countryside, learned Welsh and spent countless hours enjoying folk music and local male voice choirs.

Today, at 80 years old, Tony shows no signs of slowing down. As Grace’s Resident Ambassador, he proudly represents fellow residents, speaking with inspectors, visitors, journalists and senior leaders about the things that matter most to people living in the home.

A passionate believer in staying independent, Tony refused to let declining mobility hold him back. Instead, he invested in a Rascal scooter, which helps him continue visiting local shops, enjoying walks and staying active. As Tony likes to joke: “I’ve not hit anyone with it yet!”

Tony’s enthusiasm is infectious. A keen baker and winner of the Trust Bake Off for Grace in 2024, he works closely with the chef team, sharing recipes, sampling new dishes and offering feedback. He is also the creator of the now much-loved “Tony Awards”, an annual celebration recognising the dedication and hard work of Grace’s staff.

Whether he’s discussing cricket tactics, organising celebrations or welcoming visitors to the home, Tony brings warmth, humour and a sense of purpose to everything he does. For Tony, moving to Grace did not mean giving up the life he loved. It gave him the support he needed to keep living it.
