Care you can feel confident in

The Coombes is a beautiful care home, with lovely gardens and seating area outside. The home is exceptionally clean, and the staff are always caring, friendly, and the residents are well looked after. They provide great activities for the residents which they all seem to really enjoy, people come in to sing to them which is so lovely to see them join in, they also play bingo and have days out too. The food is amazing, all homemade, and the cakes and puddings are exceptional. I feel my brother is very lucky to be in a caring, home from home atmosphere. Thank you for all your support and kindness to my brother.

Sister of Resident, The Coombs

Whether it’s wet or dry outside, we at OSJCT feel that activities are essential in providing the best caring environment to live in.

Hobbies don’t simply stop when living with us at The Coombs. We have a dedicated Activities Co-ordinator who works closely with our residents to create a programme of fulfilling activities and events, tailored around each resident’s requests, hobbies and interests. The programme of events and activities provide a source of fun and laughter, to help each resident live their life to the full and make new friendships.

Here is a sample of activities on offer:

  • Trips to garden centres, cafés, pubs, sporting events, National Trust parks, wildlife parks, aquariums and museums.
  • Visit from Pets as Therapy Dogs
  • Exercise and wellness activities, for example Seated Yoga, Zumba
  • Board game competitions and quizzes
  • Music therapy sessions
  • Gardening
  • Arts and crafts
  • Communal Church services

With so many well-being activities for body and mind on offer, we also recognise that everyone needs some personal space for relaxation and mindfulness for personal reflection. The cosy lounges offer an opportunity for some quiet time or to host family and friends.

And that’s not all:

We’ve had silent discos, hoe downs, Chinese banquets, Oscar parties and so much more.

Many of the activities feature Reminiscence Therapy to aid those living with Dementia to remember events, people and places using sight, touch, taste, smell and sound.

The talented chef and kitchen team prepare tasty, home-cooked meals on site daily from our own kitchens. We source quality produce for our excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. All-day dining is available for lighter meals and snacks and all dishes are carefully balanced to get the best nutritional value and cater for individual dietary requirements and preferences.

Seasonal produce is chosen whenever possible and of course, relatives and friends are always welcome to join us. The menus change daily and the kettle is always on. Our chef bakes every day so there is always a fresh cake for residents, friends and family to enjoy.

Residents are also encouraged to help prepare their own food and to make snacks whenever they choose.

Jackie Jones

Specialist Senior Care Leader

Jackie is our Specialist Senior Care Leader and has over 25 years of experience to contribute in this pivotal role at The Coombs.

“I initially started working at The Coombs back in April 1993. My children were getting older which gave me the time to start working again. I found out about a local job at The Coombs from a family friend and decided to give it a try – 27 years later and I am still here!”

Jackie has a brilliant knowledge of the care industry and enjoys using her experience to help other members of the care team.

“The best part about working at The Coombs is getting to know our wonderful residents and supporting the rest of the staff team whenever I can.”

It is only natural that things will have considerably changed over Jackie’s time at The Coombs, but she continues to set high standards of herself and the team which has contributed to The Coombs’ consistently high reputation in the local community. This is something Jackie is very proud of.

And the best time of year at The Coombs? Well that’s an easy one for Jackie. “We don’t have a Christmas Day at The Coombs… we have a Christmas month! Christmas at The Coombs is always a rewarding time of year when we bring the staff, our residents and the community together.”

Lyn Callow

Activities Co-ordinator

Lyn is our Activity Co-ordinator at The Coombs. Her role is centred around providing a range of activities for residents to enjoy. Lyn works closely with her local contacts to ensure our residents remain connected with their local community during their time at The Coombs.

“As an Activity Co-ordinator, it’s my job to make sure our residents are happy with the activities provided. We try to make our activities as varied and diverse as possible – although I would be in trouble if we didn’t have bingo every Friday!”

Before starting her role at The Coombs in June 2019, Lyn ran her own local business in Lydney for 12 years.

“Following a long career in retail, I decided to close my business and try something new. I heard about this role at The Coombs. From the first moment I walked through the door, I fell in love with the warm and friendly atmosphere at The Coombs.”

Lyn has been a great addition to this warm and friendly atmosphere that runs throughout the home, and she particularly enjoys seeing it rub off on our residents.

“The best part of my role is seeing the residents smiling and enjoying the activities I have put in place. One of my hobbies is crafting and sitting down with our residents to do crafting activities brings back lots of fond memories.”

One of Lyn’s other hobbies is dancing, and she is a member of a local dancing group. This is something she is also looking to bring into her role at The Coombs.

“We are blessed with a beautiful garden at The Coombs and in the summer, we aim to make the most of it by getting outside as much as possible. This year we are planning a garden party for our residents and the local community, with a number of local dancing groups looking to attend.”
