In support of Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Action Week which kicked off on Monday 21 May, Athelstan House opened its doors to the community and residents’ families and friends to enjoy a week of spa treatments and relaxation.
Bordered off for privacy, the loungeroom was set up like a spa with low lighting and spa music. The spa also included a break out room with refreshments which included tea, coffee, a selection of herbal teas, fresh orange juice and platter of fresh fruit. Residents enjoyed the relaxation the spa week brought to the home.
During the week, Athelstan House kick ran a session which included a foot spa followed by a chiropodist session carried out by a volunteer.
Throughout Monday, Wednesday and Thursday there was a Reiki professional onsite. Sherry Tolson gave up her personal time to come in and offer sessions to anyone who wanted one. It was amazing to see how interested the residents were and keen to learn all about Reiki and its positive stress reduction and healing elements.
Thursday held an impressive 36 appointments from manicures, pedicures, Reiki massages and chiropodist sessions.
Annette Bains, a local from Malmesbury, was one of the many members of the community who came to visit and have a treatment. “My nails are still intact! The time I spent at Athelstan House was a very relaxing 40 minutes. Katie was really friendly & listened to what I wanted regarding my nail shape & colour. I was amazed to discover the session (& cuppa) was all free!” Annette said.
Cherish Salon donated nail polishes, nail files and varnish remover for the occasion. Waitrose also gave a hand by donating sample creams and other pieces to aid the week.
“Our Spa week has been such an amazing support for the community; it was a huge success and we will definitely be doing it again next year to support Dementia Action Week,” Athelstan House’s Activities Coordinator, Danya Clark, said.
The spa week was a great way to support Alzheimer’s Society and raise awareness, our residents at Athelstan House had a fantastic time and are very grateful for those who donated their time, efforts and products to the cause. See you next year!
